Silky Smooth: A Silk Press

June 29, 2016

A Silk Press is a process used to temporarily straighten textured (curly, kinky, wavy) hair. First, hair is cleansed, shampooed, and conditioned based on hair texture and condition. Next, the hair is blow dried to stretch or lengthen its natural curl. Heat breaks the bond of the hair, allowing the hair to be temporarily manipulated into stretching its length. Lastly, the hair is silkened by applying heat to the hair using a flat iron or hot comb (heated iron comb). At this point, the hair can be left straight and smoothed or styled with curls. The effects of this look is temporary, as humidity in the environment can cause the hair to frizz and revert to its natural curl pattern. Words of caution: excessive heat can cause irreversible damage to the hair, so be careful to make sure you keep hair healthy and nourished with regular deep conditioning and applying heat, mostly, to new growth and mid-shaft, pressing the ends of hair only as needed. Also make sure to keep hair trimmed on a regular basis. Split ends are also a common effect of excessive use of heat. Long term silk pressing can lead to denaturing of the natural curl pattern. Excessive heat can permanently break the bonds of the hair, leading to a permanent straightening of the hair strands. Anti-humectant products can also be used before and after styling to reduce absorption of moisture to the hair causing hair strands to swell and frizz. Always consult with you haircare professional if you have any questions regarding the benefits and restrictions of a Silk Press. It is a great way to straighten the hair. When done properly if gives beautiful healthy hair results! It leaves the hair silky smooth.
